Rev. Gainey was born April 17, 1948 in Darlington County, SC a son of the late Otis B. and Mittie Purvis Gainey. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War and the recipient of The Bronze Star (with “V” Device) for valor, presented by General Westmoreland for his efforts in saving his entire platoon.

On Mother’s Day of 1975, Bro. Larry was born again by God’s amazing grace. He began his Christian service by witnessing to everyone he came in contact with, sharing the good news of Jesus Christ and His love for mankind. In early 1980, Bro. Larry accepted the call on his life to preach the gospel. God placed him into the ministry of pastoring, and he served the following churches: Dillon Emmanuel Holiness, Bethlehem Holiness of Bladenboro, NC, Souls Harbor of Wallace, SC, Little Bless Holiness of Oak Grove, SC, Fayetteville Emmanuel Holiness, and McColl Holiness Church. His home church was Bennettsville Emmanuel Holiness Church.

Rev. Gainey’s passion was preaching and pastoring. He had a special place in his heart for missions. His heart’s desire was for everyone to hear that Jesus loved them. One of his favorite sayings was, “I’ve got something very important to tell you – I Love You.” His family will always remember him for his faithfulness, steadfast love, and the encouragement he always was. Another of his beloved quotes was, “Things won’t always be this way!”

In addition to his parents, Rev. Gainey was also preceded in death by 1 brother, Walter “Bobby” Gainey; and 1 sister, Anita Hicks.

Survivors include his devoted and beloved wife of 51 years, Ruby Gainey of the home; sons, Robert (Bobbi) Gainey of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, and Mark (Mindy) Gainey of Council, NC; daughters, Crystal (Dennis) Stamey of Wallace, SC, and Michelle (Pete) Wilks of Hartsville, SC; 11 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; brother, Otis Gainey, Jr. of Chesterfield, SC; sister, Pat White of Patrick, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Bennettsville Emmanuel Holiness Church “Missions,” c/o Bubba Rowland, 107 Dogwood Avenue, Bennettsville, SC 29512.
