Chesterfield, SC - Mr. William Barney Purvis, 80, went home to be with the Lord on Monday evening, August 4, 2025. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Westfield Creek Baptist Church on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at 2:00 PM, officiated by Pastor Jason Pope, Pastor Doug Anderson, and Brent Taylor. The family will greet friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM Sunday, prior to the service at the church.
Born on November 30, 1944, in Chesterfield County, SC, Mr. Purvis was the son of the late Charles William Purvis and Ruby Lee Johns Purvis. He served his country honorably as a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and later retired from Highland Industries.
Mr. Purvis was a faithful member of Westfield Creek Baptist Church and was usually the first to greet you on the steps of the church with a smile and bulletin in hand. He also served on the social committee and building and grounds committee of the church and was most notably recognized and appreciated for keeping the candy dish in the vestibule stocked each week. His love for the Lord, his church, his pastor, and his family were evident to all who knew him. He was a beloved member of the BWZ Men’s Club representing Westfield Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Purvis enjoyed attending auctions, often finding treasures to share as blessings for others. He will be fondly remembered for his humble spirit and servant's heart.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Purvis was preceded in death by his son, Mark Alan Purvis; nephew, Joe Purvis; and sister-in-law, Kathy Purvis.
He is survived by his son, Chris Purvis (Leslie Hodge) of Cheraw, SC; daughter, Lisa Owens of Cheraw, SC; Buck Owens of Cheraw, SC; Brian Covington of Wallace, SC; Calista (Dean) Quick of Wallace, SC; Brandi Covington of Morven, NC; Courtney Covington of Bennettsville, SC; Jerry Clark of Dillon, SC; numerous grandchildren; siblings, Charles Purvis of Thomasville, NC; John Purvis of Ruby, SC; Frances Purvis of Chesterfield, SC; and Nancy (Mike) Henry of Chester, SC; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and his extended Westfield Creek family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Westfield Creek Baptist Church, 316 Westfield Church Road, Cheraw, SC 29520.
