Susan Mary Mathers

Susan Mary Mathers, age 70, entered into rest on August 27, 2025. The family will receive visitors and friends on Tuesday, September 2, 2025 from 5:00PM to 6:00PM with a celebration of life service to follow in the chapel of Miller Rivers Caulder Funeral Home located at 318 East Main Street, Chesterfield, South Carolina 29709. Susan will be laid to rest beside her husband, MSG Danny Lee Mathers at the Florence National Cemetery on Wednesday, September 3, 2025 in a private service for the family.

Born on September 21, 1954, to Camille Lionel Vaillancourt and Colleen Lynaugh Vaillancourt, Susan grew up in a large, loving family surrounded by many siblings. Her childhood was filled with laughter, adventure, and the kind of simple joys that come from growing up with brothers and sisters who were also best friends. Whether playing outside until the sun went down or sharing stories around the kitchen table, those early years were full of warmth and connection. Though life eventually led each of them down different paths, the bond Susan shared with her siblings remained strong and enduring—a testament to the deep love they held for one another. That sibling bond is one that will last a lifetime.

Before settling into her beloved home in Mount Croghan, Susan traveled extensively across the world with her late husband, Danny, who served proudly in the U.S. Army. Together, they built a life of adventure and resilience, moving from place to place as duty called. Their daughter, Christina, accompanied them on many of these journeys, creating cherished family memories along the way. Of all the places they lived, Susan held a special fondness for their time in Germany, where the beauty of the countryside and the richness of the culture left a lasting impression on her heart.

After settling in Mount Croghan, Susan devoted herself to her home and family. As a homemaker, she created a haven of comfort and care, always putting the needs of others before her own. She had a deep love for animals and cared for many throughout her life, giving each one a sense of safety and affection. Her green thumb was evident in the way she lovingly tended to the flowers and bushes around her home—her garden blooming as a reflection of her own gentle spirit.

Her greatest joy, however, was her family including her daughter, Christine Mathers and her son, Alan John Mathers. Susan’s most treasured moments were spent with her son, Alan, and her adored grandson, Joseph Alan Mathers. Joseph was truly, as she always said, “the light of her life.” Susan spent many days sharing countless adventures, traveled to new places, and made memories with her son, Alan, and his family that will be cherished forever.

Susan’s quiet strength, generous heart, and nurturing soul touched all who knew her. Her legacy lives on in the lives she loved and the memories she helped create. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

In addition to her parents, Susan was preceded in death by her husband, Danny Lee Mathers, her sister, Monica J. Vaillancourt and her brother, John C. Vaillancourt.

Survivors include one son, Alan (Brittany) Mathers; one daughter, Christina Mathers; two brothers, Paul J. Vaillancourt and Michael W. Vaillancourt; three sisters, Julie R. Vaillancourt-Mungin, Celeste A. Mock (Vaillancourt) and Angela R. Vaillancourt; and her beloved grandson, Joseph “AJ” Mathers.

Because of Susan’s love for animals, the family is asking that Memorials may be made to American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) ATTN: ASPCA Gift Processing Center P.O. Box 96929, Washington, DC 20090-6929.
