Shelby Jean Chewning Curtis, 86, of Chesterfield, South Carolina passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2023, in her home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, from the Chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home with Brent Taylor officiating. The burial will follow the service in the Chesterfield Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M. prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

Shelby was born on August 28, 1937, in Anson County, North Carolina to the late Woodrow Wilson Chewning and Edna Baker Chewning. Shelby was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, and was known for her kindness and warm spirit. After retiring from Chesterfield Manufacturing, she and her husband Julian owned and operated Curtis Service Station and Wrecker Service. An accomplished cook, her homemade biscuits and apple turnovers were the highlights of family gatherings. She was an avid reader and enjoyed getting lost in the pages of a book. She was also an accomplished traveler, traveling to almost all 50 states with the exception of Hawaii.

 

In addition to her parents, Shelby was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Julian Perry Curtis; granddaughter, Amy Leigh Curtis; brother, Ronnie Chewning, Sr.; and sister, Peggy Rodgers.

 

She is survived by her sons, Mike Curtis (Cindy) and Todd Curtis both of Chesterfield, South Carolina; daughters, Wanda Miles (Charles Ray) of Mount Croghan, South Carolina, Pam King (Randy), Theatus Freeman, and Jackie Curtis (Terry Wayne Brigman) all of Chesterfield, South Carolina; grandchildren, Charlie Miles (Caroline), Jamie Miles (Jenell), Jeremy Curtis (Brittany), Tyler King (James Paxton), Taylor King (Lizz), Chase Freeman (Denise), Baylin Brigman, Ava Grace Freeman, and Holton Brigman; great-grandchildren, Briley Miles, Jamison Miles, Raegan Canipe, Lucas Miles, Dayton Freeman, Bristol Freeman, Timber King, and Nolan Curtis; sister-in-law, Carolyn Curtis; brother-in-law, Bill Curtis; also numerous nieces and nephews.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gentiva Hospice of Chesterfield, 205 E. Main Street, Chesterfield, SC 29709.

 

Shelby will be remembered for her love of family, her generous heart, and her adventurous spirit. She left an indelible mark on all who knew her and will be deeply missed. Her legacy of love, kindness, and resilience will continue to inspire us all.
