Ms. Sallie Berry Crowley, age 92, passed away peacefully at her home November 25, 2024. A Celebration of Life service will be 1:00 PM Saturday, January 25, 2025 from the Chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home with a special presentation by the Nurses Honor Guard of South Carolina. The family will greet friends following the service.
Born on October 1, 1932, in Chesterfield, SC, Ms. Crowley was the daughter of the late Jackson Asbury “Berry” Crowley and Martha Cassidy Crowley. She graduated from Ruby High School in 1949 and earned her Registered Nursing degree from Tuomey School of Nursing. Her nursing career began at the UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, where she was an integral part of the surgical staff. She later joined the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington and eventually retired from Barnes-Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis, MO.
After her retirement, Ms. Crowley relocated to Surfside Beach, SC, where she became actively involved in her community. She dedicated her time to various volunteer efforts, including at the Surfside Beach Library and Brookgreen Gardens, and was a passionate member of the Surfside Sea Turtle Guardians. Ms. Crowley enjoyed attending Surfside United Methodist Church. Known for her vibrant and active spirit, she enjoyed walking each morning, reading extensively, and tending to her flowers.
Ms. Crowley was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother Jack Crowley, brother Perry Crowley, sister Jean Gause, brother-in-law Walter Teal, niece Angie Thurman, and nephew Jackson Teal; and special brother, Chucky Crowley.
She is survived by her sisters, Carolyn (Travis) Outlaw of Cheraw, SC, and Jo Ann Teal of Chesterfield, SC; nieces Kaye Smith and Melinda Crawley; nephews Kevin Thurman, Scott (Becky) Outlaw, and Blade Teal; great-nieces and great-nephews Mary-Kaitlin Thurman (Blake Jacobs), Leah Thurman (Clayton) Hurst, Brittany (Chase) Winstead, John Michael Crawley, and Chase Winstead, as well as numerous other nieces and nephews and special friends Rossette, Connie, and Defanie.
