Reverend R.P. Grice

Cheraw, SC

Reverend R.P. Grice, age 91, heard the words, “Well done, thy good and faithful servant,” on Sunday evening, April 21, 2024. The Service to Honor and Celebrate the life of Preacher Grice will be 3:00 PM Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at Cheraw Church of God with Bishop Tony Edwards officiating. The burial will follow the service in the Chatham Hill Memorial Gardens. A time of visitation with the family and friends will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home.

Reverend Grice was born October 29, 1932 in Blenheim, SC a son of the late Braddy and Bessie Meggs Grice. Early in his formative years, Bro. Grice accepted the Lord as his Savior and not long after felt God’s call upon his life to preach the gospel. He met and married the love of his life, Sister Julia Grice, and together they faithfully served the Lord together for nearly 72 years.

Reverend Grice was licensed and ordained into the Gospel Ministry in October of 1956, serving Bristow Freewill Baptist Church as Pastor until 1961. In 1962, he began pastoring the Latta Church of God, and from there God used him mightily as he and Sister Grice served the following churches, Pine Ridge Church of God in West Columbia (1965-1970), Cheraw Church of God (1970-1981), Seneca Church of God (1981-1984), McColl Church of God (1984-1986), Florence Church of God, (1986-1992), and Woodside Church of God in Greenville, SC (1992-1998).

Following his retirement from full-time pastorate, Bro. Grice was a friend to many pastors and churches always willing to fill the pulpit and preach on special occasions. He would often quote from memory entire chapters of the Bible as he preached and would be quick to share John 14 was his favorite! A man with a true pastor’s heart, his entire life was devoted to pointing men, women, boys, and girls to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Even in his last few days on earth, Bro. Grice would be sure to take the time to pray with his nurses and aides, exemplifying his Christ-like spirit that we have all been blessed to witness.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Bro. Grice loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He also enjoyed helping his family and grandchildren work on Grice’s farms, where he “worked circles” around the younger generation.

The last surviving member of his immediate family, Reverend Grice was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Angela “Angi” Carson; daughter-in-law, Tami White Grice; grandchildren, Ashley Jackson, and Christopher Hobbs; and brothers, Leroy Grice, B.J. Grice, Coy Grice, Carl Grice, and John Terrell Meggs.

Those left to cherish his memory include his devoted wife of over 71 years, Julia Grice of the home; children, June (George) Pearre of Chesterfield, SC, Lafon (Cheryl) Grice of Gibson, NC, Charlotte (Keith) Jackson of Chesterfield, SC, Richard Grice of Wallace, SC, and Pastor Joe (Denise) Grice of Dillon, SC.

Also surviving are grandchildren, Lynn (Russ) Shepherd, Tracy Grice, Shannon Grice, Melinda Grice, Amber Grice, Bradley (Crystal) Grice, Patrick Grice, Austin (Mandy) Grice, Dylan Grice, and Brent (Kayla) Turnage; great grandchildren, Logan, Holden, Bella, Jonathan, Matthew, Jaxson, Tyler, Vivian, Bentley, Gabriel, Skylar, Rivers, and Ruthie; in addition to generations of nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the S.C. Church of God Home for Children, PO Box 309, MauldinSC 29662.

How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? ~ Romans 10:14
