Mildred Gulledge Thurman
Ruby, SC Mrs. Mildred Gulledge Thurman, age 100, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday evening, November 3, 2024 at Springhill Assisted Living of Pageland. Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at Ruby Baptist Church by Pastor Ronald Thurman with the burial to follow in the Ruby Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 2:00 – 3:00 PM Wednesday, prior to the service in the sanctuary of the church.
Born November 30, 1923 in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late W.C. “Johnny” and Flonnie Welsh Gulledge. A graduate of Ruby High School and Geyer Business College, she was a retired executive secretary with A.O. Smith in McBee, SC and was formerly employed with Grinnell Fire Protection Company, Charlotte, NC. She was an active and devoted member of Ruby Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School Teacher for the senior women’s class for many years. Mildred loved her church and church family and was faithful to be there whenever the doors were open.
Mildred, known to some as Micki, and to others fondly as “Mamo”, loved her family and friends with a deep love, and was loved deeply in return. She was known for her kind and compassionate demeanor. All who came into her path were struck by her sweet disposition and kind-hearted smile. She reflected God’s light through-out her life, as she lived her faith putting God and others before herself. Mildred had a passion for baking and sharing. Known for her carrot cake and pound cake, she gave away many more than she ate over many years. She also found joy in being outside, doing yard work, and taking care of her flowers.
At 60 she married her one true love, Knox Thurman. She was a Godly wife who loved and cared for Knox for the rest of his life, and was an unwavering care giver as she helped him keep his desire to spend his final months of life in their home together.
Mildred was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband, Knox Thurman; her parents; brothers, Travis, Robert, Howard, John (Johnnie B.), and Jady Gulledge; as well as by her sister, Dorothy Giles Gulledge; niece, Marie Giles Brown; and nephew, Loyd Jr. Giles.
Surviving are her step-son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Sherri Thurman; granddaughter, Cassie Thurman Davis (Leslie); and great grands Payton and Cooper Davis. Also surviving that she loved very much are nieces and nephews, Dennis Gulledge (Rita), Kevin Gulledge, Linda Varner, Kenneth Gulledge, Michael Gulledge, Paula Williams, Pam Cranford, Phil Gulledge; as well as their extended families and other nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to Springhill Assisted Living Facility in Pageland for the love, care, and support you showed Mildred over the last three and a half years. It is because of you and your efforts that her years there were filled with quality, happiness, and fellowship. She loved each and every one of you. Many thanks also to Gentiva Hospice of Chesterfield, SC for their outstanding professional, specialized, and compassionate care for Mildred during the most challenging time of her health and advanced years.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ruby Baptist Church, P.O. Box 5, Ruby, SC 29741, or to Gentiva Hospice of Chesterfield, 205 E. Main Street, Chesterfield, SC 29709.
