Melvin Eugene “Gene” Polson III passed away peacefully at his home on October 18, 2025 following a brief illness. He was the son Agnes Polson and the late Melvin Eugene Polson, Jr.
Gene was preceded in death by his father listed above, maternal grandparents, Edwin Harold Odom, Sr. & Ina Mae Odom, paternal grandparents, Melvin Eugene Polson Sr., Doris Polson Hudson & David Bryant Hudson. He was also preceded in death by his dearest friends Robbie Burr and Scott Joplin.
Left to cherish is memory are his Mother Agnes O. Polson of the home and sister Shannon (Al) Sellers of Chesterfield (Brother of the Heart Bobby Roscoe Jr, of Manning, SC and sister of the heart, Tonya Roscoe Childers of Cheraw, SC; along with a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.
A 1990 graduate of Cheraw High School, Gene began at a young age learning construction working as a carpenter for a residential home builder. He later worked in maintenance at Walmart Distribution in Pageland, SC. He most recently worked with the Housing Authority of Marlboro County.
Gene had a passion for racing his entire life that was passed down by his father Eugene. Many weekends of his childhood were spent with his father where one or both were racing go carts. Later years he was a late model stock car racer with his father as his “master” mechanic. When they weren’t round track racing they would be at the drag strip in Darlington SC where Gene helped and supported his dad’s drag racing career.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, October 20, 2025 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery officiated by Reverend Dennis Wallace and Reverend Danny Malloy. The family will greet friends following the service at the home.
The family would like to recognize McLeod Health Cheraw, McLeod Regional Medical Center and McLeod Hospice for their excellent care during the past three weeks. The family would also like to extend a special thank you to his Hospice Nurse Brandi Owens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Chesterfield County Animal Shelter or to a charity of one’s choice.
