Mary Elena Estridge Carter

Chapin, SC

Mrs. Mary Elena Estridge Carter, age 91, formerly of Chesterfield, SC, entered into rest on Monday, December 7, 2020 at Generations of Chapin Assisted Living, where she had resided the past 5 years. A Celebration of Life Graveside Service will be 11:00 AM Thursday, December 10, 2020 at Chesterfield Cemetery. The family will greet friends following the service at the cemetery.

Mrs. Carter was born October 26, 1929 in the Buford Community of Lancaster County, SC to the late Ira Durham and Annie Carnes Estridge. She was a graduate of Buford High School and Winthrop College, Class of 1950. She retired from Chesterfield High School with over 20 years of service as the School Librarian. Mrs. Carter was an active member of Pine Grove Baptist Church where she developed many friendships serving as greeter, and was a former member of Chesterfield Baptist Church. She enjoyed following Clemson football, working in her flowers, playing bingo, and working word search puzzles. She also enjoyed taking trips with Christian Tours. Mrs. Carter will be fondly remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

In addition to her parents, Mary was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of almost 50 years, William “Bill” C. Carter who passed in January of 2001; and brothers, Madison, Joe, and Jack Estridge.

Survivors include her daughters, Lin (Frank) Lake of Prosperity, SC, Kathy Carter of Myrtle Beach, SC; son, Russ (Amy) Carter of Chesterfield, SC; grandchildren, Carter (Jenna) Lake, Trevor Lake, Rebecca (James) Wood, and Kristin Carter; great granddaughter, Taylor Lake; sister-in-law, Evelyn Estridge; and two nieces and their families.

The family would like to extend our sincere thanks to the staff of Generations of Chapin for it’s loving care over the past five years, and to MSA Hospice (Newberry) for its compassionate care over the past week.
