Mrs. Thurman was born October 2, 1926 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Arthur Franklin and Olive Oliver Crawley. Mrs. Thurman’s life was spent showing God’s love by giving her best to her family and the children that she served as teacher and counselor.

Learning was important to Mrs. Thurman, not only for herself, as seen by pursuing her Bachelor’s and Masters degrees from Appalachian State Teacher’s College, but as she encouraged and believed in her students. She continued her education by earning a Doctor of Divinity degree. She served the students of Chesterfield County in many capacities during her career. In 1951, the Woodmen of the World recognized Mrs. Thurman for her outstanding public service when her quick thinking resulted in all students and staff at Ruby School to evacuate safely a burning building that was completely destroyed. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society and Phi Theta Kappa Fraternity.

She was an active member of Ruby Baptist Church for many years. She served as a Sunday school teacher and various other positions.

Mrs. Thurman was a loving wife for 61 years until her “Sweet Dave” went to heaven. As long as she was able, she showed love to her children and grandchildren. She prayed for them, encouraged them and always reminded them of how proud she was of them.

She enjoyed reading and traveling to as many places as she could to see God’s beautiful world. Spending time with family and friends was her favorite pastime.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Thurman was also preceded in death by her husband, David Perkins Thurman, Sr.; brothers, John Robert Crawley, Will Frank “Hank” Crawley, and Douglass “Doug” Crawley; sisters, Mary Etta “Makie” Kirkley, Helen C. Rivers, and Batalee “Bate” Esparza.

Survivors include her children, David Perkins (Sharon) Thurman, Jr., and Omerea Thurman both of Ruby, SC; grandchildren, Sarah (Justin) Thurman Griggs, David (Emalee) Thurman, III, Rob (Lori) Clemons, and Kelly (Jaywon) Clemons; great grandchildren, Jada Clemons, Skylar Clemons, and Gracelyn Griggs; brother-in-law, Genaro Esparza of TX; and sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Crawley of Chesterfield, SC, and Irene Crawley of Ruby, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews.
