Mr. Joseph "Joe" M. Terry, age 83, of Cheraw, South Carolina, peacefully passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, surrounded by his loving family. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Lower Macedonia Memorial Gardens, officiated by Dr. Lindsay Powell. The family will greet friends immediately following the service at the cemetery, and at other times at the home of Sylvia Wallace.
Born on January 31, 1942, in Richmond, Virginia, Joe was the son of the late Agnew Leonard Terry and Dora Alberta Boatwright Terry. He grew up in Richmond, VA and later relocated to South Carolina in 2000, where he became a cherished resident of the Cheraw Manor for 20 years. Throughout his time there, Joe developed many friendships and was always eager to lend a helping hand. He was a faithful member of Lower Macedonia Baptist Church, where he was proud to serve as an usher.
In January 2020, Joe moved to the Williams Street Community Training Home of CHESCO Services in Cheraw, where he continued to be a friend to all.
Known for his enthusiasm, Joe would always be prompt to remind you of the biggest day of the year, his birthday! Family meant the world to him, and he enjoyed going out for meals and staying connected to his family and friends through his trusted "flip phone." He would often come to family gatherings and special occasions, but it was not out of character for him to be ready to leave as soon as he finished eating.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Terry was preceded in death by his brother, Wilson Leonard Terry Sr., and his sister, Faye Terry, as well as his cousin and devoted caregiver for many years, Wanda B. Lewis, his cousin and close friend, Judge Van Simpson, and most recently his cousin’s husband, Elmer Wallace, Sr.
He is survived by his nephews, Wilson Leonard (Kjerstin) Terry, Jr. of Gainesville, FL, and Mark (Denise) Terry of Chesterfield, VA; nieces, Susan (Michael) Martin of Chesterfield, VA, and Mary Beth (Thom) Gann of Chesterfield, VA; along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews, including Sylvia B. Wallace, Wayne (Frances) Boatwright, Christine (Tim) Scott, and Bubba Lewis.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lower Macedonia Baptist Church "Building Fund," located at 5267 Teals Mill Road, Chesterfield, SC 29709.
Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home (www.mrcfuneralhome.com) of Chesterfield, SC is serving the Terry family.
