Newport, TN

Mr. Jesse “Calvin” Freeman, age 81, currently residing in Cheraw, SC, entered into rest on Thursday, January 6, 2022. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at 11:00 AM in the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church Cemetery by Rev. Dean Parker.

Due to the continued COVID-19 precautions, the family respectfully requests no visitors at the home during this time. Thank you for your love, prayers, and understanding.

Mr. Freeman was born March 14, 1940 in Chesterfield, SC a son of the late Jesse Freeman and Gertrude Curry Freeman McDonald. He was a graduate of Chesterfield High School and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in history from the University of South Carolina. Calvin was an U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War, and a retired employee of Sonoco Industries with over 30 years of service. A man with a love for music, Calvin was a talented pianist who enjoyed all types of classical music genres. He enjoyed college football and was an avid South Carolina Gamecocks fan. Other hobbies included playing golf, going for a walk, and most enjoyably “snacking,” and eating.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Freeman was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Harry Atwood Board, Jr.; nephew, Christopher Atwood Board; and close friend, Frankie Munn.

Survivors include his sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Board of Cheraw, SC; niece, Patti Board of Cheraw, SC; great nephew, Preston (Michael) Stanley of Tulsa, OK; god-son, Ronnie (Laura) Munn of Newport, TN; and close friend, Earl Ricker of Newport, TN.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (, the American Cancer Society, ( or to a humane society of one’s choice.
