Mrs. Jane Copeland Benovitz, age 87, passed away on July 16, 2025, at the Angel House Hospice Care Center in Whiteville, North Carolina. In accordance with Mrs. Benovitz’s wishes, she will have a private graveside service at the Ruby Cemetery in the coming days.
Mrs. Benovitz was born June 17, 1938 in Chesterfield County, SC a daughter of the late Bernis S. and Wincie Pauline Hancock Copeland. A proud graduate of Ruby High School, Class of 1956, Jane married Len Benovitz shortly after graduation and embraced the life of a dedicated military wife.
A woman of strength and independence, Jane raised three children while her husband served in Vietnam. Determined to further her education, she later enrolled at Fayetteville Technical Community College, where she earned an Associate’s Degree in Accounting. She went on to have a successful career, working as an accountant at Fort Bragg and later with H&R Block.
After retirement, Jane found joy in country living, spending over 30 years on her farm surrounded by the animals she cherished—goats, chickens, cows, donkeys, and her cats. She was also a gifted seamstress who lovingly sewed clothes for her children. Jane took great pride in caring for her family. Even after many of her family members passed, she still cared for them by bringing flowers to their graves on every holiday.
Whether it was the quiet comfort of tending her animals or enjoying a simple scoop of vanilla ice cream, nothing brought Jane more fulfillment than the love of her grandchildren. She adored spoiling them and delighted in taking them on adventures she knew would bring them happiness.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Benovitz was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Benovitz; and her son, Danny Copeland Benovitz.
Survivors include her children, Cynthia (James) Benovitz of Elizabethtown, NC, Michella (Darrin) Baxter of Elizabethtown, NC; grandchildren, Laura (Geoff) Benovitz, Lynsay (Stacey) Baxter, Seth (Sierra) Baxter, Jayson Baxter; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Madelyn, Connor, Raelynn, and Emory Jane.
