Mr. Wallace, affectionately known as “Harrison”, “Wally”, or “Red” was born on November 19, 1934 in Cheraw, SC. He was a son of the late Elijah Clifton Wallace and Millie Knight Wallace.
Harrison had a strong work ethic that began as a 8 year old boy while doing yard maintenance and in cotton and tobacco fields; that work ethic would remain with him throughout his entire life. After being told at a young age that he would never walk, Wally overcame Polio; and even into his later years, he walked at least 2 miles every day. He was dedicated to doing all things well, while never uttering a complaint. He truly was one of the last of the greatest generation! He could often be found “piddling” around his yard, driving his tractor, or showing off his knowledge of cars and engines, including numerous 57' Chevy cars. Mr. Wallace honorably served his country in the South Carolina Army National Guard for four decades, while dedicating almost 50 years of work at Delta Mills, where he never missed a day of work. After retirement he worked at the county dump and as a Security Guard at the Cheraw Cotton Mill.
He had the ability to master any skill that he put his mind to, including the skills of water dowsing, millwright and welding. He was known for having a sharp mind and was always "trying to learn you something"; both of those attributes were demonstrated through his willingness to share what he had with others and to humbly lend a hand wherever necessary. He enjoyed going to auctions, showing off his “stuff”, birdwatching, fishing and eating bologna and cheese sandwiches and fatback.
Mr. Wallace loved God and Jesus Christ and enjoyed attending Chesterfield Church of God. Above all, Mr. Wallace was a kind man to everyone he encountered. He lead a life of selflessness and although a man of few words, when he spoke he always done so with kindness and never a bad word. He was a devoted husband, loving daddy and proud granddaddy, a family man and friend to all.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Wallace was preceded in death by infant twin Wallace, his brother Elmer Ray Wallace, Sr.; sisters, Icyean Wallace, Area Hyatt, Edell Bone, Virgie Wallace, Ruth Watts, and infant girl Wallace.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 65 years, Joyce Ann Mixon Wallace; children, Wally Trina Nicole "Trouble" Wallace of Cheraw, SC, Icyean "Icy" "Jeffro Bodine" (Chuck) Wallace-Lockey of Columbia, SC; Cenatha "Nanny Boo Boo" (Kenny) Wallace-Gleich of Patrick, SC, Shelia "Hardhead" Hewett of Cheraw, SC, and Charles Clifton Wallace of Darlington, SC; grandchildren, Courtney "Sweetie Pie" Skinner, Hunter Skinner, Eli Skinner, Robert Harrison (Corina) Gleich, Kendrick Lance "CooCoo" (Maria) Gleich, Heather (Daniel) Henkel, Racheal Gleich, Josh (Rosanna) Wallace, Bridget (Brad) Gandy, Charlene, Sabrina, John, Trey; in addition to 26 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gratitude is expressed to all of Mr. Wallace’s children for their love and care of him and to Nurse Rhonda Locklear who recently assisted in caring for him.
Memorials may be made to the Chesterfield Church of God (320 E. Blvd, Chesterfield SC 29709)
