Charles S. Smith, age 85, of Chesterfield, South Carolina, passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2026. A funeral service will be held at 4:00 PM on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at Ruby Baptist Church, with Pastor Ronald Thurman and Pastor Max White officiating. Interment will follow at Watson Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 3:00 – 4:00 PM Sunday, prior to the service at the church.
Born on October 4, 1940, in Kannapolis, North Carolina, Charles was the son of the late Leonard Jerome Smith and Janie Florence Hancock Smith. He was a 1959 graduate of Ruby High School and a faithful member of Ruby Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon for multiple terms through the years, a member of building and grounds committee, and was actively involved in the Men's Senior Adult Sunday school class and the RBC Men’s Ministry.
Mr. Smith was a former employee of Burlington Industries and a retired employee of Chesterfield County Public Works (formerly the county shop) with over 35 years of service. Following his retirement, Charles went back to work at the Chesterfield County Convenience Center where he developed many friendships and knew most everyone on a first name basis. A mechanic at heart, Charles enjoyed working on classic cars and was a true Ford man.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was also preceded in death by his first wife, Novella “Bibbie” Hurst Watson; brothers, Robert Smith and Jerry Smith; and step-daughter, Robin Adams Jordan.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Alice Adams of the home and her children, Connie (David) Sweatt of Chesterfield, SC; grandchildren, Brooke (Jeremy) Mills, Mary Elizabeth (Rev. Max) White, and Emily Sweatt all of Chesterfield, SC; his buddy and grandson, Hayes Mills; brother, William Smith of Ruby, SC; sister, Joyce Smith Sellers of Ruby, SC; nephews, Matthew (Faye) Smith, and Ricky (Kelly) Sellers both of Ruby, SC; sister-in-law, Mary Smith of Ruby, SC, and Lucy Hancock (Jerry Hannah) of Mt. Croghan, SC; brother-in-law, Charlie (Carolyn) King of Chesterfield, SC.
