SFC (Ret.) Charles “Chuck” Douglas McKain, Jr., age 84, of Patrick, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.


A graveside service with full military honors will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at 4:00 PM at The Curry Family Cemetery. The service will be officiated by Brent Taylor, with a eulogy delivered by his daughter, Cheryl Alley. The family will greet friends following the service at the cemetery.


Born on August 27, 1940, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Chuck was the son of the late Charles Douglas McKain, Sr. and Michalina “Millie” Kullhawiec McKain. He proudly served his country in the United States Army for 22 years, 2 months, and 16 days, becoming a Vietnam Veteran. Throughout his distinguished military career, he received numerous accolades, including the Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation, Army Commendation Medal, six Good Conduct Medals, as well as the Pathfinder Award, Marksman Qualification Badge for the M-16 Rifle, Parachute Badge, and Master Parachute Badge.


Following his retirement from the Army, Chuck worked many years with the USPS in Chesterfield prior to his retirement. Chuck was actively involved in his community, holding memberships in the American Legion Post 74, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). He was an avid fan of the Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers and enjoyed fishing.


Remembered for his larger-than-life personality, Chuck possessed a remarkable sense of humor and a quick wit and was able to bring a smile to everyone around him.


In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife of 42 years, Molly Curry McKain.


Chuck's legacy is carried on by his daughters, Michelle (Steve) Byrd of Cheraw, SC, and Cheryl (Joe) Alley of Port St. Joe, FL; his grandchildren, Lindsey (Brad) Gainey of Little Mountain, SC, Trey (Sophia) Alley of Fort Mill, SC, Tyler Alley (Bella Boone) of Sparks, GA, and Clayton Byrd (Kaitlyn Stewart) of Columbia, SC; and his great-grandchildren, Molly, Maggie, and Marah Gainey, Presley and Ledger Alley, and Harper Alley. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Sallie (Sonny) Berrie of Sumter, SC, Bonnie (Jimmy) Thurman of Las Vegas, NV, and Betty Curry of Cheraw, SC, along with numerous nieces and nephews.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Legion Post 74, P.O. Box 124, Chesterfield, SC 29709.
