Rev. Lonnie Wayne Melton, age 74, entered into rest on Monday, May 14, 2018. Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Thursday, May 17, 2018 at Center Grove Baptist Church by Pastor Charles Terry, Rev. Don Rhyne, and Rev. Rodney Nicholson with burial to follow in the Oakland Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM Thursday, prior to the service at the church, and requests that all ministers in attendance serve as honorary pallbearers.
Rev. Melton was born August 6, 1943 in Chesterfield County, SC a son of the late Floyd and Ruby Burr Melton. A 1961 graduate of Chesterfield High School, Lonnie Wayne accepted God’s call into the gospel ministry and was licensed in 1991 by his home church, Oakland Baptist Church. In 1998, Rev. Melton was called to pastor Center Grove Baptist Church and faithfully served there for over 18 years. His life’s passion was telling others of God’s forgiveness and love, even to the last days of his life. He also enjoyed gardening, watching westerns, “tinkering”, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Rev. Melton was also preceded in death by 3 brothers, George “Bobby” Melton, Rev. Floyd Melton, Jr., and Rev. Larry Dean Melton; and 1 sister, Elzy Rae Linton.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 26 years, Starr V. Melton of the home; 3 children, Wayne Melton of Chesterfield, SC, Kelli (David) Gainey of Cheraw, SC; and Brandy (Gene) Teal of Chesterfield, SC; grandchildren, Taylor Melton of OK, Trenton Melton of Camden, SC, Melody Teal of Greenwood, SC, Wes Teal, Aiden Melton, and Ava Freeman all of Chesterfield, SC; sister, Betty M. Odom of Chesterfield, SC; daughter of the heart, Theatus Freeman; also numerous nieces and nephews.
